 Our client is a 365 bed military hospital in Abu Dhabi, the capital of the United Arab Emirates. The hospital provides medical services to the members of the UAE Armed Forces and their families. The hospital holds JCI accreditation and provides tertiary care medical services.

Head Nurse (Emergency Department)

 

 

  • The post holder will be responsible for their assigned clinical area providing frontline leadership to staff on nursing issues and patient-centered care. The post holder will lead by example to drive up standards of nursing care and practice and to empower nurses to take on a greater range of clinical task to improve patient’s care in their clinical area. Be a highly visible presence in clinical practice and be accessible to service users and their families.

  • The post holder will provide advice and expertise in the management of complex cases and contribute to the development of stronger working relationships across the range of hospital, community services and relevant agencies/providers to ensure seamless provision of services for users.

  • The post holder will lead by example to drive up standards of nursing care and nursing practice and to empower nurses to take on a greater range of clinical task to improve patient’s care in their clinical area. Be a highly visible presence in clinical practice and be accessible to service users and their families.

  • The role will encompass managerial, clinical, professional and developmental aspects, requiring the post holder to work in close collaboration with their peers and others to use resources in the most effective way, to free up clinical staff to get on with clinical work and ensure optimum level of care is achieved on a twenty-four hours basis.

  • Ensure that the areas of responsibility function as an integral part of ZMH services as well as being responsible for the establishment and maintenance of effective communication with all relevant personnel both internal and external to the hospital setting

  • The post holder will take a unit wide lead on the following areas:Core & Unit Specific Competences, Appraisal & Development Planning, Infection Control, Education and Training, Continuing Professional Development, Recruitment & Retention, Risk Management, Documentation, Line Management, Professional Leadership, Quality/Audit/Patient Outcomes and Policies, Procedures and Guidelines.

Clinical Practice

To provide a visible lead and involvement in the delivery of patient care to ensure that patients receive a high standard of care that has a therapeutic focus and is responsive to their needs.

In conjunction with the multi-professional team, implement and embed relevant contemporary developments in nursing to improve patient outcomes.

Provide advice and support on the management of complex cases and the prevention and management of risk

Provide the necessary leadership, supervision, co-ordination and development of nursing and support staff in challenging areas of activity.

Be fully conversant with clinical policies, procedures and guidelines and ensure they are further developed and implemented in practice.

Ensure all incidents are reported in accordance with hospital policy and promote the culture of learning from proactively managing and influencing change in clinical practice.

Strengthen and maintain links with other professionals and agencies ensuring that there is joined up working to provide a seamless service for the service user and their families.

 

Clinical Management:

  • To provide operational management to the designated clinical areas

  • Ensure structures for management supervision are effectively operational in designated clinical areas.

  • Ensure systems are in place which promotes patient’s choice in all aspects of their care, improve the quality of patient experience, and that any complaint are addressed quickly and efficiently

  • Manage and monitor all hospital resources to ensure they are used in the most effective way to meet the needs of service users in the clinical area.

  • In conjunction with the Clinical Nurse Manager and nursing team establish and maintain effective communications of all nursing and management forums/group & committees within the hospital setting and ensure all are focused directly on improving the quality of care and positive patient outcomes

  • Undertake serious incident reviews, complaint and participate in investigations and provide data and reports as required.

  • Implement ,monitor and evaluate Policies Procedures and Guidelines ensuring the highest  standards (evidenced based) for the designated clinical area and, intervene where necessary, to ensure that standards are maintained

  • Proactively contribute delegate and supervise nurse student training and staff recruitment, selection and retention, ensuring that the workforce is reflective of the appropriate skills required in the clinical area at any given time.

  • Ensure systems are in place for local induction, competence based clinical development and mandatory training of all grades of nursing staff

  • Provide Senior Nurse Duty cover on a rostered/required basis.

Personal Development & Professional Responsibilities:

The post holder will:

  • Work closely with colleagues in enhancing the provision of care, developing nursing staff by incorporating a system of Individual Performance review /Personal Development Planning supported by robust clinical supervision and/or mentorship scheme.

  • In conjunction with the Development Education and Training Services ensure that all staff attends general orientation and mandatory training as required.

  • Take opportunities to extend own knowledge and skills within the aims of the service needs and available funding and prepare/maintain a concurrent portfolio of experiences to date.

  • Adhere to and promote adherence to the ZMH Nursing Code of Conduct and provide evidence of relevant registration and a current/active continuing professional development portfolio as required

  • work closely with the Clinical Nurse Manager and the Development Education and Training Services to establish and facilitate training to meet staff needs

  • In conjunction with the senior nurse team, ensure that a learning environment and robust preceptorship programme is established in the practice area.

Health Promotion/Education

  • Participate and assist in the education of service users, their relatives and their carers, in relation to their ongoing health and social care needs and care plans.

  • In conjunction with the senior nurse team ensure systems are established to routinely assess, monitor and educate patients with long-term physical conditions in line with the UAE Public Health Policies and Targets.

  • In collaboration with the senior nurse team and Infection Control team, ensure all staff members are provided with the relevant skills and knowledge to manage advice and/or assist patients in line with relevant policies, procedures and guidelines.

Advisory

  • Inform respective Clinical Nurse Managers on any matters relating to nursing/ professional issues affecting the delivery of care or services generally and, problem solve issues as they arise in a timely manner

  • Brief the Clinical Nurse Manager on matters in relation to future planning and developments in the specific service, emergent trends/themes in clinical areas, recruitment and retention, operational objectives and specific nursing goals.

  • Provide advice and support to the other members of the senior nurse team in relation to nursing management & practice.

Working Conditions:

  • Take an active role in ensuring the working environments are safe, aesthetically conducive to health care provision and effectively managed.

  • Work closely with the senior nurse team to ensure the application, monitoring and reporting of Health and Safety policies, procedures and guidelines.

  • Develop effective communications with all departments, teams and services who have direct input into working conditions and the safe environment of your designated area of responsibility

Candidates must hold a B.Sc. Degree in Nursing from an accredited program (Master degree preferred) in North America or the European equivalent and a minimum of then six experience of which at least three years have been in a Leadership position in a western hospital of similar size. Current Licensure in the country of origin required.
